 1. There are 12 pencils in a box. AJ has 15 boxes of pencils. How many pencils are altogether?

12 x 15 = 180

10 x 10 = 100

10 x 5 = 50

2 x 10 = 20

2 x 5 = 10

100 + 50 + 20 + 10 = 180

2. Alyanna had 167 marbles. She played a few games with Wuatai and had only 42 marbles left.  How many marbles did Wuatai win from Alyanna.

167 - 42 = 125
100 - 40 = 60

60 - 2 = 58

7 - 0 = 7

60 + 58 + 7 = 125

3. Arapeta decided to buy a birthday present for his mum that will cost $92. How much more money does Arapeta has to save if he has $26.

92 - 26 = 66

90 - 20 = 70 borrow 10 60

2 + 10 = 12

12 - 6 = 6

60 + 6 = 66

4. Dyanasty has some lollies that she wants to share among her classmates. There are 30 children in her class. How many lollies does she have if each student gets 8 lollies?

30 x 8 = 240

10 x 8 = 80

10 x 8 = 80

10 x 8 = 80

80 + 80 + 80 = 240

5. Avania’s school is 57 km from her home. She walks 14 km and bikes the rest of the way to school. What distance does Avania cover by bike?

57 - 14 = 43

50 - 10 = 40

7 - 4 = 3

40 + 3 = 43

6. In a class of 46 students, there are 26 boys and the rest are girls. How many girls are there in the class?

46 - 26 = 20

40 - 20 = 20

6 - 6 = 0

20 + 0 = 20

WP1. Problem 1

Glenbrae school will be going to visit the Auckland Museum. It has 290 students. The school has to hire some buses to take the students to the museum. If each bus can carry 25 passengers, how many buses will the school hire ?

290 ÷ 25 = 11 r 15

So Glenbrae needs to hire 11 + 1 = 12 buses

WP2. Problem 2

The senior school from Glenbrae  will be going to visit the Motat. There are 108 students. The school will hire some buses to take the students to the motat. If each bus can carry 25 passengers, how many buses will the school hire ?

108 ÷ 25 = 4 r 8

So Glenbrae needs to hire 4 + 1 = 5 buses

WP3. Problem 3

The junior school from Glenbrae  will be going to visit the Zoo. There are 82 students. The school will hire some buses to take the students to the zoo. If each bus can carry 25 passengers, how many buses will the school hire ?

82 ÷ 25 = 3 r 7

So Glenbrae needs to hire 3 + 1 = 4 buses

1. 128 x 19 = 2432                                              2. 186 x 12 = 2232
100 x 19 = 1900                                                  100 x 12 = 1200
20 x 19 = 380                                                       80 x 12 = 960
8 x 19 = 152                                                         6 x 12 = 72
1900 + 380 + 152 = 2432                                     1200 + 960 +72 = 2232

3. 243 x 15 = 3645                                                4. 223 x 45 = 10035
200 x 15 = 3000                                                    200 x 45 = 9000
40 x 15 = 600                                                        20 x 45 = 900
3 x 15 = 45                                                            3 x 45 = 135
3000 + 600 + 45 = 3645                                        9000 + 900 + 135 = 10035

128 x 9 =1152
100 x 9 = 900
20 x 9 = 180
8 x 9 = 72
900 + 180 + 72 = 1152

86 x 12 = 1032
80 x 12 = 960
6 x 12 = 72
960 + 72 = 1032

43 x 15 = 645
40 x 15 = 600
3 x 15 = 45
600 + 45 = 645

123 x 45 = 5535
100 x 45 = 4500
20 x 45 =900
3 x 45 = 135
4500 + 900 + 135 = 5535

WALT: solve multiplication problems using place value partitioning

There are 8 pencils in a box. AJ has 15 boxes of pencils.
How many pencils are there altogether?

15 x 8 = ?

10 x 8 = 80

5 x 8 = 40

80 + 40 = 120

To solve this problem, I used place value partitioning. I
multiplied 10 by 8 and I got 80 as the answer. Then,
I multiplied 5 by 8 and I got 40 as the answer. Then
I added 80 and 40 and I got 120. So AJ has 120 pencils
altogether.

Maths

W.A.L.T: we are learning to solve subtraction problems

8966-6698=2268.

So you can’t subtract 6 from 8 because 6 is smaller than 8 so 6 asked 60 if he can borrow 10 and so 60 gave 6 ten and 60 became 50 and 6 became 16 and 16-8=8 and 50 is smaller than 90 so 50  asked  900 if he can borrow one hundred so 900 gave 50 one hundred and 900 became 800 and 50 became 150 and 150-90=60 and 800-600=200 and 8000-6000=2000 and 2000+200+60+8=2268
